Sports Physicals at Omaha Urgent Care

Sports physicals, also known as a “pre-participation physical examination,” is a check-up to assess a young person for potential health issues that could affect their ability to play a sport or participate in a sports activity.

Most schools, organizations, and states now require a person to pass a sports physical exam before getting involved in a school sport or activity. A sports physical is not, however, as comprehensive as a complete annual exam done by your pediatrician.

Sports Physical Exams at Urgent Care Omaha Clinics

There are two parts to these sports/pre-participation physicals.

  1. The first part of a child’s sports physical focuses on their medical history.
    • Previous serious injuries and illnesses including hospitalizations or surgeries.
    • ongoing medical conditions such as trouble breathing, passing out, and feeling dizzy.
    • family history of medical problems should be disclosed on this form and discussed with the medical provider.
  2.  The second part is the sports physical exams. This will include:
    • measurement of height and weight
    • pulse and blood pressure
    • a check of ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, vision, hearing, reflexes, flexibility, and posture
    • a urinalysis screen for diabetes
    • hernia check for males

The health care provider will evaluate the person’s fitness, based on the above checks, to give approval to participate. Occasionally, there may be restrictions placed on participation, such as:

  • wearing special protective equipment
  • carrying an inhaler if they have asthma

Why are Sports Physicals Important?

Sports physicals in Omaha are crucial for:

  • Injury Prevention: Identifying any conditions that may increase the risk of injury during sports activities.
  • Health and Fitness Monitoring: Ensuring athletes are in good health and fit to participate.
  • Compliance: Meeting the requirements of schools and sports organizations to ensure eligibility for participation.
  • Peace of Mind: Providing reassurance that it’s safe to engage in sports activities.

What Questions Are Asked During a Sports Physical?

During a routine sports physical examination, the following questions are commonly asked:

  • What medical problems run in your family?
  • What medical problems or illnesses have you recently had? (asthma, sickle cell trait, COVID-19, diabetes)
  • Have you had any previous hospitalizations or surgeries?
  • What previous sports injuries have you had? (concussions, broken bones, sprains)
  • Have you ever passed out, felt dizzy, had chest pain, or had trouble breathing while exercising?
  • What medications are you taking regularly?
  • Do you smoke or vape, consume alcohol, use drugs, or take diet pills, or performance-enhancing supplements, including steroids?

If you or someone you know is planning to participate in physical activities or sports this season, it’s recommended to schedule a sports physical with a qualified healthcare provider to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. If you are visiting your primary care doctor or an urgent care clinic for a school physical, ask them about the required sports physical as well.
