Wintertime Respiratory Illnesses

Wintertime is the peak season for contracting illnesses. Due to the colder weather, we tend to stay inside more, which often puts us in proximity to disease-causing germs. When we do get sick, it can be frustrating not knowing exactly what we may have “caught”.

Wintertime Respiratory Illnesses

Wintertime Respiratory illnesses that affect your breathing can be especially confusing because they have similar symptoms. The common

  • cold
  • influenza
  • pneumonia
  • bronchitis
  • RSV (respiratory syncytial virus)

are some of the most common breathing-related illnesses we see. Some can be treated with medicine, while others have to run their course while dealing with the symptoms.

Wintertime Respiratory Illness Symptoms

Cold

Symptoms of a cold include congestion or runny nose, sneezing, cough, and sore throat, and sometimes a headache and fever.

Influenza (flu)

Influenza (flu) is a quick onset of fever, headache, body aches, and overall fatigue that can last for weeks. This is not the same illness as what some people call the “stomach-flu”.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia involves deep cough, fever, painful breathing, and chills. Bronchitis usually has the same issues as a cold but is more severe because it includes inflammation of the airways to the lungs.

RSV

RSV also has the cold-like symptoms mentioned above but can develop severe cough, wheezing, rapid or difficult breathing, or bluish skin color due to lack of oxygen.
