Vaccines

Vaccines Overview

Vaccine development is one of the most important medical advancements in history. Thanks to vaccines, some of the most debilitating diseases have been eradicated or brought under control. Smallpox has been eradicated and wild polio has almost been eliminated. As a result, people all over the world look forward to a brighter future. Many preventable diseases such as whooping cough, diphtheria, chickenpox, and measles are also on the run thanks to the widespread use of vaccines.

Vaccines Overview

Aside from serious diseases, there are also vaccines for common ailments such as the flu. and even now the novel coronavirus. There is a lot of misinformation out there about vaccines, their benefits, and how they actually work in the human body. Understand how they help will ensure that you can make an informed decision regarding your future healthcare.

How Does A Vaccine Work?

The purpose of vaccines is to train your immune system to fight back against bacteria and viruses that may invade your body. A vaccine will introduce a small amount of inert or weak bacteria or viruses into your body. As a result, once it has been introduced into your system, your body will start to create a customized defense against it. Your immune system catalogs every bacteria and virus that enters your body and creates a response that will be used any time it happens to find it in your system again.

When you are infected with an agent that you have been vaccinated against, instead of becoming gravely ill, you will only have a mild form of the infection. Since your immune system has the blueprint of the bacteria of the virus, it is prepared to fight it off in the event you ever encounter it.

Types of Vaccines Available

There are five types of vaccines used in the world today. Each is made to be the most effective way of fighting a particular virus or bacteria. The vaccine types are as follows:

Killed (inactivated) vaccines – this type of vaccine takes a protein or other part from the inert virus or bacteria which it is intended to fight. This allows your immune system to create a defense against future infections. An example of a Killed (inactivated) vaccine is the pertussis vaccine.

Toxoid vaccines – this type of vaccine has a chemical or toxin that is made by the virus or bacteria it is intended to fight. As opposed to making a person immune to the infection, it protects you from the negative side effects of the infection instead. One example of a toxoid vaccine is the tetanus vaccine.

Live virus vaccines – this type of vaccine utilizes an attenuated or weakened form of the bacteria or virus it is intended to fight. This allows your immune system to create antibodies and build up resistance to the infection. Some examples of live virus vaccines are rubella, mumps, and measles vaccines.

mRNA vaccines – this type of vaccine takes a part of the material from the virus it is intended to fight. It inserts instructions into the human body on how to create a harmless protein to help combat the virus. One example of an mRNA vaccine is the Covid-19 vaccine.

Biosynthetic vaccines – these vaccines are no made of the actual bacteria or virus; instead, they use substances that are manmade. The manmade materials are similar to those the vaccine is intended to prevent. An example of a common biosynthetic vaccine is the Hep-B vaccine.

The Importance of Vaccines

Vaccines are one of the best ways to reduce harmful diseases in the population. Humans are born with some protection from germs but not all. Babies get some protection from their mother, but after a time this protection naturally wears off. Vaccines allow babies, children, and even adults to get protection against many common viruses and bacteria that live in the environment. Are Vaccines Safe?

There is always a question of safety when it comes to anything relating to healthcare and medical treatment. The safety of vaccines is no different. Many people worry about how safe vaccines are for both children and adults, and the general answer is that they are safe. In fact, the risks of the diseases they are intended to prevent are much higher than the vaccine itself. Like any medical procedure, there are some risks involved. There is a small chance a person may have an allergic reaction or suffer negative side effects after taking a vaccine.

Most people are able to receive vaccinations with little to no side effects. The most common side effects are redness at the injection site, low-grade fever, and fatigue. People who have weak or compromised immune systems may be at a greater risk of serious side effects and in most cases, such patients will not be given live vaccinations.
