Symptoms and Treatment for Insect Bite and Stings

Most of the time, an insect bite is not going to do much more than be a nuisance. Bug bites might cause some redness, swelling, and itching, but these symptoms usually go away fairly quickly. However, some reactions are potentially dangerous, depending on how the body reacts to the venom of the insect.

What Causes Insect Stings or Bites?

Mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, fire ants, bees, and spiders are common insects that sting or bite, and most people will have a mild or moderate reaction to that. Some people, though, will have a stronger allergic reaction to these stings or bites that may need medical attention.

Common Symptoms of Insect Stings and Bites

There are several common symptoms of bug bites or stings. These typically are mild and may include:

  • Redness
  • Soreness
  • Minor swelling
  • Itchiness
  • Pain
  • Burning sensation

These conditions can be treated with medicated creams, such as hydrocortisone. An oral antihistamine, such as Loratadine or Benadryl, may also be used. These symptoms usually go away in a day or two.

A severe bite or sting reaction may cause some of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Trouble breathing
  • Oral or facial swelling
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea Vomiting

These conditions will need emergency management at a hospital emergency room. If a severe allergic reaction occurs, treatment will be provided to prevent anaphylactic shock until the episode is under control.

Treatment and Urgent Care for Insect Bites and Stings

In general, most insect stings or bites only result in a minor reaction. Most of the time the itchiness and soreness will go away within the day or may two. But, if you are stung or bitten and notice that you are starting to swell in the area, chances are that you are having an allergic reaction to the venom and the best thing to do is seek medical attention near you right away.
