Seasonal Allergies

Different types of plants release pollen at different times of the year creating lots of seasonal allergies Urgent Care Omaha. In the spring, trees are the main pollinators; in summer, grasses are more active in their pollen release; and in the fall, ragweed causes most of the misery for allergy sufferers. Many people still describe the fall season as “hay fever” time, though hay isn’t the cause of the problems.

Fall Seasonal Allergies Urgent Care Omaha Driven by Ragweed and Mold Spores

In addition to ragweed and some other weed pollinators, mold spores are another cause of fall seasonal allergies. Mold can be found indoors (in high-humidity areas) and outside (in the soil and fallen leaves.) Sensitivity to these allergens causes your body to overreact, causing sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes.

Medication and Avoidance Are Two Strategies Against Allergens

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, people who are known allergy sufferers should begin taking medications a week or two before these pollens begin to scatter. A variety of oral and spray medications are available over the counter, but if those don’t provide sufficient relief, you may need a prescription and/or shot.

In addition to medication, try to avoid contact with pollen, as much as possible. These include:

  • Wear a face mask filter outside on windy days or when working in the yard
  • stay in air-conditioned houses, cars, or buildings
  • shower and wash clothes after being outside for extended periods to rinse off pollens that may have stuck to you
  • make sure that higher-humidity areas of your home (like your bathrooms and basement) are kept clean and dry

Seek care with a medical professional if your symptoms limit your enjoyment of this beautiful time of the year.
