Ear Infections

Many children and young adults experience ear infections. These ear infections, known as “otitis media”, involve painful inflammation and build-up of fluid behind the eardrum. Symptoms can last 3-7 days.

Antibiotics not needed for many common ear infections Omaha Urgent Care

Increasing evidence shows that a course of antibiotics is usually not needed to treat common cases of otitis media, according to a study done by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and reported by WebMD. Treating these cases with over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, is often a better alternative.

Resistance to antibiotics is a global concern

Growing resistance to antibiotics has led to a greater emphasis on when it is appropriate to use these drugs. “The evidence shows antibiotics are not needed by most children and young people with middle ear infections,” says Professor Gillian Lang from NICE. “Routine prescribing of them in all cases isn’t appropriate.”

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard of England’s Royal College of GPs echoes that sentiment. “We need to get the word out to patients that antibiotics are not always the answer to minor, self-limiting conditions such as ear infections, colds, and sore throats,” she says.

Ear Infections Omaha Urgent Care Guidelines

Guidelines state that antibiotics are a treatment option in some cases, including when symptoms don’t improve after three days or when a burst eardrum leads to fluid discharge. A visit to a health care provider can determine what course of action to follow.
